The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that Canadian and American fighters had been mobilized to escort two Russian bombers flying near the North American coast.

NORAD reported that two F-22 fighter jets and two CF-18s had identified two Russian strategic Tu-160 Blackjack bombers entering an area patrolled by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) on Saturday morning.

No conflicts were reported between Russian, American and Canadian planes.

NORAD added that it uses radar, satellites and fighter jets to patrol the skies and monitor aircraft entering US or Canadian airspace.

"NORAD's priority is to defend Canada and the United States. Our ability to protect our nations begins with the detection, location and identification of aircraft of interest approaching US and Canadian airspace, "said General Terrence J. O'Shaughnessy, Commander of NORAD, in a statement.
